Non hodgkin's lymphoma
Morning all

I was diagnosed with stage 3/4 non hodgkin's lymphoma yesterday. I already have a chronic pain condition along with absentia of common sense.

The oncologist says he wants to start chemo straight away but it may not work because of all the other meds I have to take (26 tablets per day and buprenorphine patch).

My question is, has anyone on here had NHL and gone through the chemo treatment, and what can I expect?

Although I own a healthcare company, we don't deal with anything like this and just getting a leaflet from the consultant doesn't instill confidence in me.

Please feel free to fuck me off at your own convenience

A mate had it years back. He's still with us, totally NHL-free.

Best of luck, hope it goes OK.

Re: Non hodgkin's lymphoma
Not had it personally but have watched someone very close go through it.

It took a while to get the diagnosis during which time a lot of weight was lost. Oncologist reckoned would not last too long without treatment but concerned about the heart failing when the treatment started. I’m only saying this to indicate how ill the person was.

Chemotherapy started, no sickness (anti sickness drug), loss of hair, tiredness for a day or so after each chemo session. Recovery was slow but not as slow as you might think. Had to have an additional two rounds of chemo to wipe out the last of the cancer which was a bit of a kick in the bollocks but it worked. It took a little while to build the strength back up but one done many more years (over 10) were had living a full and active life.

Chemo does fuck your immune system up whilst you’re having treatment so keep away from people with any colds, flu, viruses, etc. You also have to try to avoid too much sun (no sunbathing).

I would say that a positive outlook helps. Once they thought it COULD be cured the outlook changed and, I believe, that was part of the reason for surviving.

Good luck with the battle and I sincerely hope you end up with a similar result.

Re: Non hodgkin's lymphoma
Had the Hodgkin's variety 15 years ago now. Two stem cell transplants (second one from an Anthony Nolan stem donor) eventually got rid of it. Cured my athletes foot too which was a bonus.
Good luck with the treatment mate. The science has moved on a lot since then.

Re: Non hodgkin's lymphoma
I had a lump in my neck for which i was diagnosed NHL after a biopsy. Had it two and a half years and am on watch and wait. The lump has shrunk in the last six months and has almost disappeared. I go for six monthly check ups. My prognosis is quite good for my age and I'll probably die of something else before the lymphoma gets me.
